Michigan Native American Presentation

Today we  had Gary Ghareeb from the Native American Experience visit us at Haisley. Mr. G taught us about the people of the 3 Fires-the Ottawa, the Pottawatomi, and the Ojibwe tribes. We learned how they moved around Michigan in order to live and survive depending on what season it was. Mr. G also shared cooking tools, clothing, games, and hunting tools with us. You can see in the pictures just how much we enjoyed this!

Math-week of Dec. 5

We just started Unit 3. Last week we described rules for patterns and used these to solve problems (in and out boxes). This week we will be focusing on using the partial-sums and column-addition methods. We will subtract using the counting-up and expand and trade methods.

Writer's Workshop-Cookies Around the World!

Our feature articles are just about finished! Next, students will conduct research to find a cookie recipe and learn the history of cookies around the world. They will use what they learn to create an informational article about their cookie. I am hoping to create a global cookie recipe book. Students can start brainstorming about which cookie they want to research. On Monday, I will share an example  using a Norwegian cookie called Krumkake as my subject.

Reader's Workshop Week of Dec. 5

We are learning to build meaning in nonfiction text by using strategies to look closely at the text for the main idea. Stopping and thinking frequently about questions or confusions we have about a text helps us understand what we are reading. This week we will also learn how to build meaning by jotting notes about nonfiction texts. Here are some pictures of us during Reader’s Workshop. (pictures were taken in October when it was warmer:)
