Our Class Website

Just a quick reminder that we have a class Weebly website with many great curriculum links. On the math page there are many, many links for mastering multiplication facts.

Science-Habitats

We are starting our new unit on Habitats! This unit introduces the students to organisms and their habitats. They will look closely at how a habitat meets the survival needs of organisms and how physical and behavioral characteristics help organisms survive in their habitat. We will also learn the difference between biomes and habitats.

April Events for your calendar

April 11th-3rd grade in school presentation about Habitats  with the Ecology Center of Ann Arbor

April  25th-3rd grade field trip to the Washtenaw County Farm Grounds for Rural Education Day-9:30 am-12:40 pm (Chaperones needed!)

Reader's and Writer's Workshop-Text Evidence

Our focus this week is using text evidence in our reader responses. Text evidence is proof from the text or story that helps us prove a point. While reading our biographies, we proved that our famous person had a certain character trait. Next, we will relate this same skill to our independent reading books. to prove or explain something in our writing.  This "text evidence language" below is a great reference for discussing books with your child. Using this language when discussing a story helps get them in the habit of using this same language when they write!

Math Updates

A game we have been playing is Salute. The students all explained how to play this game on Seesaw. Check it out-its a really fun, motivating way to learn the multiplication facts! You can play game at home.
We are continuing our unit on Fractions. Here are the objectives we are working on:
-developing an understanding of fractions as distances on a number line
-recognizing whole numbers as fractions
-identify and locate fractions greater than, less than, and equal to 1 on a number line
-solve number stories involving fractions
-share collections equally and represent the resulting groups with fractions

IXL provides some great activities to practice fractions. There are actually 52 different games on IXL for fraction practice!

Reading and Writing Workshops

We will begin our unit on biographies. Students will begin this unit with an inquiry into the genre of biography and begin to explore and evaluate biographies to determine the importance of individuals on the world today.  Students will consider what makes someone famous or important by considering their actions and dialogue (speeches), the time period that they lived in, and the people that influenced them along the way.  At the end of this unit, students will be creating a timeline poster or Powerpoint presentation about a famous individual. You will also see ties to our current Social Studies unit which is about the French explorers who come to Michigan.

Mystery Reader

Have you ever read a book that just sticks with you and you want to share it with everyone you come in contact with? Well, we have a spot for you in our class! In honor of March is Reading Month and the love of reading and sharing stories, we are inviting families (older siblings, grandparents, moms & dads, aunts & uncles) to our classrooms but shhhhh..... no one in class can know who the mystery reader is until you walk through the door. Get our detective brains working by preparing 3-5 adjectives that describe you without giving away who you are. Tips for success...pick a book you are excited about and let your passion/love for the book guide you. Props can be fun and add excitement.

Here is the sign up genius that I created for you to sign up if you wish to come in to our classroom. I have made 9 time slots but if these get filled up I can add more!

Geometric Cities

Our Geometry City project was a huge hit! The students had such fun with this and learned how to use geometric terms to design a city. Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who were able to come in to see our projects! If you were not able to come, stay tuned for our Habitats Project Fair which will be in May!

These last 2 pictures are when we put all our cities together to make a Hahn Megacity.

March -Dates For Your Calendar

Tuesday, March 14-Report Cards go home
Thursday, March 16-Field Trip to see James & The Giant Peach at Forsythe Middle School
Friday, March 17-Book Swap AND Camp Read A Lot in Mrs. Hahn's classroom
Friday, March 24-Read A Shirt Day
Friday, March 31-Dress Like Your Favorite Character Day

Math-Unit 5-Fractions and Multiplication Strategies-Our new Math unit

Our fraction unit is one of the most fun units! Here are the objectives we will accomplish…
-the size of the fractional part changes with the size of the whole
-representing fractions using standard notation, words, numbers, and drawings
-recognizing equivalent fractions
-use known multiplication facts (helper facts) to solve unknown multiplication facts
-use doubling as a multiplication facts strategy

-identify and explain patterns in multiplication products

We have made 2 types of fraction kits already-a circle kit which came with our Everyday Math workbook and a fraction bar kit out of strips of construction paper. Having 2 different ways to think about fractions helps with our flexibility of number. Here is an example of us making equivalent fractions with our fraction bar kits.

Seesaw

The students love sharing their work on Seesaw! Here are some pictures of us in action.

Word Work-silent letters-K, B, L, T

This week we are practicing spelling words with silent letters such as salmon and doubt. These silent letters can be tricky. Next week we begin our work with latin and greek root words! This is a great way to build vocabulary and learn spelling patterns at the same time. You will see some of this come home for homework next week!

Math-Week of Jan. 30th

Our Geometry unit is in full swing! This week we will continue building our Geometry City. The creation of this Geometry City is an example of Project Based Learning. The students have already drawn a map of their city. They connected sections of centimeter grid paper together to make the sections of their city. Connecting the sections was especially tricky because they needed to connect at a certain spot so the roads would connect. Now we are making 3-D buildings for our city and we will measure the perimeter and area of all the building's footprints. On Thursday and Friday, we will be working on a 2-day math performance task. Performance tasks are real world math problems. We will compare and discuss our different solutions to our task Building a Rabbit Pen.

Reader's Workshop week of Jan. 30

Close Reading is a strategy we will be practicing this week in Reader's Workshop. Close Reading means rereading. It helps us dig deeper and helps our understanding of the text. We don't always need to read everything 3 times but it helps our comprehension when the text is more difficult.  Close Reading is also a good strategy to use in test taking! The questions below are also helpful to use when discussing what your child is reading.
